Two Western Nebraska Residents Are Killed in Wyoming Crash After Frontier Days Trip Home, With Alcohol and Speed Under Investigation

SCOTTSBLUFF, NE — Two Bayard, Nebraska, residents were killed Thursday in a crash on Wyoming Highway 92 near mile marker 22, close to the junction of U.S. Highway 385 and Wyoming Highway 92. A third person, also from the Bayard area, was flown to a hospital in Loveland, Colorado, with injuries that authorities said were not immediately identified. The crash happened as the group was traveling home after attending Cheyenne Frontier Days. Wyoming Highway Patrol said alcohol and speed are being investigated as possible contributing factors.

Investigators Examine Crash Factors

Wyoming Highway Patrol Trooper Aaron Brown said the initial investigation suggests the driver of a semi-trailer was turning onto the road when the vehicle carrying the Bayard residents collided with it. Brown said the car then rolled over after the impact. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the people involved. The investigation remains active, and officials said they are still working to confirm exactly how the crash unfolded.

Brown said speed appears to have been a factor in many crashes, and evidence at the scene indicates it may have played a role here as well. He also said alcohol is being looked at as a possible secondary contributing factor. At this stage, investigators have not announced any charges or final findings.

Travel Home Ends In Tragedy

The crash is one of several serious incidents Wyoming Highway Patrol has seen during this year’s Frontier Days travel period, Brown said. The wreck occurred after the group had spent time at the annual Cheyenne event, which draws large numbers of visitors and creates heavy traffic on roads between Wyoming and western Nebraska. For many Panhandle residents, that route is a familiar one for summer trips to and from Cheyenne.

Brown said the injured passenger was taken by air ambulance to Colorado because of the severity of the crash and the distance to the nearest appropriate medical care. The agency has not said whether any other vehicles were involved beyond the semi-trailer and the car carrying the Bayard residents.

Patrol Urges Safer Driving

Brown used the crash as another warning for motorists heading home from major events or traveling long rural stretches at highway speeds. He said drivers should avoid combining alcohol with driving, because the mix is especially dangerous when vehicles are moving quickly and road conditions leave little margin for error. He also reminded motorists to buckle seat belts on every trip.

Officials said Wyoming roads have seen an unusually high number of crashes and other incidents during Frontier Days week this year. Patrol members are continuing to monitor traffic and investigate fatal wrecks as the travel season continues. The names of the victims and the injured passenger will be released only after families are notified.
